Political Analyst, Levy Ndou has warned that if coalitions at local government level are not handled well, they might not last. This as uncertainty continues to prevail in the major Metro Municipalities in Gauteng and some parts of KwaZulu-Natal, on whether or not coalitions are the right way to go. Recently in the City of Johannesburg, two council meetings collapsed due to disagreements on the voting process of Committee Chairpersons; while in Ekurhuleni Metro, parties who are in coalition with the DA accused it of bullying tendencies.

But first: The number of migrants across Africa has risen sharply in the past decade as war, crises and climate change have wreaked havoc, according to the UN's Migration agency.

The vast majority of migrants, around 80 percent, do not leave the continent. For them, Ivory Coast in the west, Uganda in the east and South Africa are the top destinations. Most people arriving in South Africa come from Mozambique and Zimbabwe. And estimates suggest around three million Zimbabweans are currently living in the country.

The situation has led to a significant backlog in paperwork, with a large number of asylum seekers waiting for years to receive a response to their applications.

The Kingdom of Eswatini, the last absolute monarchy in Africa, is conducting parliamentary elections despite a ban on political parties. The country's constitution places a strong emphasis on individual merit as the basis for selecting lawmakers, who are not permitted to have affiliations with any political groups.

In practice, the majority of candidates in these elections remain loyal to the king, making it unlikely that the election will bring about significant changes in the political landscape. Approximately 585,000 registered voters will cast their ballots to elect 59 members of the lower house of parliament, which primarily serves an advisory role to the monarch.

President Jacob Zuma survived another vote of no confidence, securing his job as President of South Africa and the ANC.

While it may look like 2022 has seen an unprecedented high number of Kenyan women vying for elective seats, data from Kenya’s electoral commission, the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission, (IEBC) shows that the growth is little. This is from 7% in 2017 to 11% in 2022.

Sexual harassment is among one of the many challenges women say face. Other challenges include violence, intimidation and the expensive nature of campaigns.
