The Nigerian government has initiated a cash transfer program aimed at alleviating the impact of fuel subsidy removal. This move comes in response to concerns over rising fuel prices and their associated effects on the cost of living for ordinary citizens.

The program is designed to support 15 million households across the country, offering them financial assistance to help mitigate the increased fuel costs. The government is taking this step to ease the burden on vulnerable households and ensure they have the means to cope with the removal of fuel subsidies.

Imprisoned Senegalese opposition figure Ousmane Sonko says he has resumed a hunger strike he called off last month ahead of elections next year.

He said he resumed the hunger strike on Tuesday to show "solidarity" with other activists "unjustly arrested for expressing their political opinions.

Sonko has accused President Macky Sall of attempting to prevent him from running in the 2024 presidential elections, charges Sall, who was elected in 2012 and will not run in the elections, denies.

He was jailed in July on charges including fomenting insurrection, criminal association in connection with a terrorist enterprise and undermining state security over incidents dating back to 2021.

South Africa's white minority has long had a disproportionate hold over the country's land. That was supposed to change when apartheid ended in the early 1990s. But since then, only 10-percent has been transferred to black owners. That amounts to a broken promise by the ruling ANC, which said it would give black farmers three times that amount. So how does President Cyril Ramaphosa want to fix the failings of his party?
