Travel video about destination Tripoli in Libya.
Tripoli is the capital of the desert state of Libya. The old town is known as the Medina and with its narrow lanes and squat buildings it is a combination of Arabian, North African and Mediterranean cultures. The joie de vivre of the local people is obvious and music and dance are part of their daily life. In antiquity the city was called Oea that was one of the three cities of Tripolitania and in Roman times this section of the coast contained the trading towns of Leptis Magna and Sabratha. Since 1963 Tripoli has been the capital of the Great Socialist Libyan-Arab People’s Republic. The old town contains a souk that was almost fully abandoned following the Great Revolution as private trading was then forbidden but when the law was abolished in 1988 it once again sprang to life. Modern Tripoli is undergoing constant development. Contemporary architecture is everywhere with skyscrapers that contain offices and apartments that have been built on the periphery of the city. Around seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is still an impressive structure that dates back to the second century A.D. Tripoli, along with the historic towns of the former Tripolitania, is one of the most spectacular places of ancient culture in North Africa and the heritage of an advanced civilisation located on the edge of the Sahara.

Two dams burst over the weekend in Derna, Libya, where the Red Cross and local officials said at least 10,000 people were missing after the devastating floods.

The confirmed death toll has exceeded 5,300, Mohammed Abu-Lamousha, a spokesperson for the administration that controls the east of Libya told a state-run news agency late on Tuesday. Tariq al-Kharraz, another representative of the regional government, said that entire neighbourhoods had been washed away, with many bodies swept out to sea.

Hundreds of bodies were piled up in cemeteries with few survivors able to identify them, according to officials, who said they expected the death toll to rise above 10,000 people

The civil conflict in Libya has escalated, threatening to destabilize the region further. Locals are stranded in their homes in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, which is witnessing a spiralling conflict between two armed factions. Libya has seen little peace since 2011. But in the last decade, armed factions continue to gain a stronger foothold and power in the country. As the civil crisis shows no signs of ending, the eternal question remains...Who will save Libya now?

International aid is slowly starting to arrive in eastern Libya - amid fears that tens of thousands are buried under mud and rubble.

Entire neighbourhoods in the city of Derna have been washed into the sea, there are shortages of food and drinking water - and relief teams are struggling to reach the worst hit areas because bridges and roads have been washed away.

So many people have died, that hospitals have been turned into makeshift morgues.

Bangladesh was always supposed to be poor. At the dawn of its existence it was already a failing state. Not only did the war of independence destroy nearly every farm, factory, road and bridge, but it came just 4 months after Bangladesh was hammered with the most destructive tropical cyclone in record history. Yet, even more daunting was the reality that Bangladesh, deprived of considerable natural resources, habitually subjected to catastrophic natural disasters, and haunted by perpetual and often violent political instability, seemed devoid of a clear path toward making things better. It was a widespread perception that Bangladesh was destined to be forever synonymous with poverty and suffering, earning it the unflattering label, as an “international basket case”.

But Astonishingly, against all conceivable odds, the past three decades have seen the country achieve, perhaps the most significant advancement in quality of life indicators of any place in the world, ever. Life expectancy has soared by 180%, while fatalities from tropical cyclones have been reduced by a staggering 100-fold. Poverty rates have dived from 80% to less than 19, while the child mortality rate has been cut by 92%. Its economy has emerged as one of the fastest growing in the world, with its GDP per capita once 50% less than Pakistan’s now almost 50% higher. And In 2019, it overtook even India, all while harboring aspirations of reaching high-income status by 2041. But how can a nation with all the odds stacked against it improve at such a blistering pace, Is this truly another economic miracle or a mirage that will painfully wither away.

What does a meth user look like? You’re probably not picturing Courtney – and that’s one reason why it’s so important to hear his story.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, meth became the most widely used illicit drug among urban gay men. "Early characterizations of the meth problem in the gay community depicted the party boy or the middle-class white man as the prototype of the meth user," says Dr. Perry Halkitis, professor of applied psychology, global public health, and medicine at New York University.

Public health campaigns in the early 2000s targeted white gay meth users as a way of combating the AIDS epidemic. This, Halkitis believes, created a stigma among middle- and upper-class white gay men and pushed the drug underground in the gay community. And while Halkitis says meth use is still common among all subsets of the gay population, a recent study of his found meth now disproportionately affects HIV-positive and African-American gay men.

To make this short, filmmaker Spencer Macnaughton spent weeks of chatting online with many men and attending a Crystal Meth Anonymous meeting at New York's LGBT Community Center, where 38 gay male ex-meth users shared their recovery stories. For more on how this was made, see the article on Vox.com: http://www.vox.com/2015/8/24/9....196953/meth-unseen-f
