Travel video about destination Tanzania.
Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and is located slightly south of the Equator. Its large variety of nature is overwhelming and includes the Serengeti and Selous Nature Reserves, the snow-covered Kilimanjaro and the spice island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. It is a country of superlatives that originated in 1964 as a result of the union of two independent countries, Tanganika and Zanzibar. On the slopes of Meru and Kilimanjaro, coffee, maize, bananas and vegetables are grown and then offered for sale at various markets. Due to its fertile volcanic soil the entire region has been used for agriculture since the middle of the nineteenth century by both the Arusha Massai and Meru tribes. The Arusha National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Africa and its green forests are a perfect playground for the countless monkeys that live there. Around twenty million years ago its landscape was created due to volcanic activity and wonderful craters were formed as well as impressive volcanic cones. The swampy forest on the slopes of the Rift Valley features more than thirty different varieties of tree, an impressive area that offers distant views across fascinating and untouched nature and for the many wealthy tourists who spend their money in the region there are various special locations that provide excellent accommodation. The origins of the Selous Game Reserve date back to German colonial times at the beginning of the twentieth century. Later, under British rule, they were united into a large protected area. Tanzania is a natural paradise that is still known by only a few. An exotic country and one that is still waiting to be explored!

In this episode, I travel to northern Tanzania which has become popular as it is home to some of East Africa's most famous parks and reserves like the Serengeti. It has also been a dream of mine to visit and travel through this part of Tanzania, from Africa's highest mountain (Kilimanjaro) to one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on the planet.

On January 26, 2022 the Northeastern Illinois University Libraries hosted a virtual book talk with Francesca Morgan, Associate Professor of History at NEIU and author of the 2021 book, A Nation of Descendants: Politics and the Practice of Genealogy in U.S. History.

From family trees written in early American bibles to birther conspiracy theories, genealogy has always mattered in the United States, whether for taking stock of kin when organizing a family reunion or drawing on membership—by blood or other means—to claim rights to land, inheritances, and more. And since the advent of DNA kits that purportedly trace genealogical relations through genetics, millions of people have used them to learn about their medical histories, biological parentage, and ethnic background.

A Nation of Descendants traces Americans’ fascination with tracking family lineage through three centuries. Francesca Morgan examines how specific groups throughout history grappled with finding and recording their forebears, focusing on Anglo-American white, Mormon, African American, Jewish, and Native American people. Morgan also describes how individuals and researchers use genealogy for personal and scholarly purposes, and she explores how local businesspeople, companies like Ancestry.com, and Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s Finding Your Roots series powered the commercialization and commodification of genealogy.

Additional information about the book can be found on the website of the publisher, The University of North Carolina Press: https://uncpress.org/book/9781....469664781/a-nation-o

Session 8 of our Academic Webinar Series, "Professional Development for Countering Transnational Organized Crime."

Session Objectives:

• Understand how security, development, and governance all play into TOC and why countering and preventing TOC depends upon addressing enabling factors in each of these areas.
• Understand how criminality and resilience factors captured in the Organized Crime Index shape different African countries’ risk and resilience profiles, and why a country’s own profile as well as those of its neighbors matter for its response to TOC.
• Reflect on relevant principles and strategies for designing efforts to counter and prevent TOC in Africa, including some development and governance approaches relevant for countries with a range of risk and resilience profiles.

This webinar, jointly organized by UNOSSC and UNDP Seoul Policy Centre (USPC), brought together actors from regional, sub-regional and interregional organizations to share their experiences and responses to COVID-19.

There is an urgent need for international cooperation and global solidarity in order to tackle this crisis together and not leave anyone behind. International organizations, including the United Nations, have called for joint approaches and cooperation on the international and regional level. The WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that “this is a time for all of us to be united in our common struggle against a common threat – a dangerous enemy. When we are divided, the virus exploits the cracks between us.”

Regional approaches provide one option of international development cooperation, which have been highly demanded as a discussion topic during the webinars of the UNDP Seoul Policy Centre´s and UNOSSC’s previous webinar series on COVID-19 and the possible implications for international development cooperation.
