South Africa has a tourist product of unequalled diversity that few other countries can match. The tourism sector in South Africa is a key driver of the economy and contributed 3.7% to GDP in 2019. Most businesses in the tourism sector are micro, small and medium sized enterprises (SMMEs) that contribute to local economies and provide more than one million jobs, in particular lower skilled entry level positions which are critical for the country’s future.

Yet SMMEs in the tourism sector face a myriad of hazards on an almost daily basis. Weak and failing public utilities, social unrest and crime (and increasingly cybercrime), exchange rate concerns, political disruption and COVID 19 restrictions pose critical challenges to business continuity. The pandemic in particular has made the business case (in every sector) for a much greater emphasis on business resilience.

Join Francis Herd (moderator), Joni Musabayana (Country Director | International Labour Organization), Themba Khumalo (Acting CEO & Chief Marketing Officer | SA Tourism), Phakamile Hlazo | CEO | Zulu Nomad, David Frost | CEO | SATSA and Mandisa Magwaxaza | Co-Vice Chairpaerson | SATSA as they discuss how South Africa’s potential as a tourism destination can be fully realised. With the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, the world is eager to return to normal. However, the complexity of the challenges Africa was already facing—including poor infrastructure, high youth unemployment, rapidly increasing debt, and climate change—means that the region’s recovery is likely to be uneven and far behind much of the rest of the world. Moreover, of its 1.3 billion people, less than 8 percent of Africans have been fully vaccinated.

Despite these obstacles, the region’s future remains bright: Its innovative youth are creating and utilizing technologies to improve livelihoods throughout the region, and leaders are using the economic recovery to rethink and reset development strategies instead of returning to the status quo. At the same time, Africa’s women and girls have emerged as influential and aspirational leaders not only within the continent, but for the world. Also, Africa is actively looking to leverage its collective power and impressive growth potential to collaborate with emerging external partners.

In this way, this year’s Foresight Africa report examines the most pressing issues facing the region in 2022. This year’s panel featured high-level global experts to discuss critical issues for the region’s recovery, including policies for economic recovery, shoring up Africa’s public health systems, empowering African women and girls, addressing the impacts of climate change, harnessing technology for improved livelihoods, and exploring partnerships with emerging global players.

Gyude Moore speaks about China’s expanding presence in Africa at the Paulson Institute's Contemporary China Speakers Series on March 5, 2019.

W. Gyude Moore is a visiting fellow at the Center for Global Development. He previously served as Liberia’s Minister of Public Works with oversight over the construction and maintenance of public infrastructure from December 2014 to January 2018. Prior to that role, Moore served as Deputy Chief of Staff to President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Head of the President’s Delivery Unit (PDU). As Head of the PDU, his team monitored progress and drove delivery of the Public Sector Investment Program of Liberia—a program of over $1 billion in road, power, port infrastructure, and social programs in Liberia after the civil war. As one of the President’s trusted advisors, he also played a crucial role in supporting President Sirleaf as Liberia responded to the West Africa Ebola outbreak and shaped its post-Ebola outlook. His research tracks the channels of private sources of finance, the rise of China and its expanding role in Africa, and Africa’s response to these changes. He holds a BS in Political Science from Berea College and an MS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University.
