US President Joe Biden is set to announce support for the African Union to permanently join the Group of 20. He's expected to do so at the US-Africa Leaders Summit, which begins tomorrow (Dec 13). While some delegations have arrived in the US capital for the event, Mr Biden has yet to schedule a bilateral meeting with any of them. That’s a marked contrast with China -- America's biggest global rival -- which has long pursued personal high level diplomacy with Africa, while investing heavily in the continent.

The AfCFTA is poised to transform Africa into the largest free trade zone in the world, connecting a market of more than 1.2 billion people and a combined GDP of $3.4 trillion (AfCFTA Secretariat). The agreement aims to boost intra-African trade and promote sustainable development across the continent by reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers, including customs delays and high trading costs, thus increasing competitiveness and resilience of African markets. Its impact will reach far beyond Africa into the global trade regime.

On January 1, 2021, trading commenced under the AfCFTA. Implementation of the agreement is ongoing. For example, in September 2021 the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS)—a tool to facilitate and simplify cross-border transactions—was rolled out, and as of October 2021, 38 of 54 signatories have ratified the agreement with three more countries preparing to do so soon.

This event will assess the significance and status of the AfCFTA; discuss key challenges in the road ahead; and, more importantly, highlight opportunities AfCFTA presents for Africa and its international partners to boost trade and investment and foster sustainable economic growth.

In 2020, Zambia was the only African country to default on its debt. But this era seems to be on the verge of disappearing, thanks in particular to the international confidence enjoyed by President Hichilema and the strengthening of the Kwacha, the local currency.

On Monday, January 24th, we invite you to the virtual book launch of Senior Fellow Chisanga Chekwe from 4:00pm-5:00pm. The author will offer a reading from the book and be in conversation with Greg Kelly, Executive Producer of CBC's Ideas on themes from Zambia: Pathways to Excellence. Q&A, book sales and reception to follow.

Pathways to Excellence suggests ways in which Zambia could liberate herself from mediocrity and become the world class economy it is meant to be. In addition to sensible prescriptions such as maximizing the efficacy of public spending, and creating conditions that support Zambian entrepreneurship, the author argues that the country's full potential cannot be realized until the ghost of colonialism is exorcised from the national psyche. Ways are suggested as to how Zambians can regain the confidence of their pre-colonial ancestors, and proceed to excellence.

Chisanga Puta-Chekwe is uniquely placed to write about Zambia. Born in the copper mining town of Chingola, Chisanga was educated at Kabulonga Boys' School in Lusaka and Sir William Borlase School in Marlow, England. He read law at the Universities of Birmingham and London before proceeding to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University.

As a practising lawyer in Zambia Chisanga represented both corporate and human rights clients opposed to the one party dictatorship that lasted from 1972 to 1991. Chisanga ran the Chekwe Consultancy in Canada from 1989 to 1994 advising clients (including governments) on international development and public policy. He served as Chair and CEO of the Ontario Criminal Injuries Compensation Board from 1994 to 1997 when he became Executive Director of Oxfam Canada.

Chisanga returned to the private sector to serve as Zambia Country Manager for a Canadian mining company in 2008. A year later he was named Ontario's Deputy Minister for Citizenship and Immigration. Chisanga retired from the Ontario government in 2015.

In addition to being president of the Masomo Education Foundation, Chisanga is a senior fellow at Massey College, University of Toronto. He recently co-founded a solar energy company whose first subsidiary is in Zambia'.

Chisanga is the author of the books, An Election to Remember (1996), Getting Zambia to Work (2011), Cobra in the Boat: Michael Sata's Zambia (2017) and Staying Ahead: Due Dilligence in Residence and Citizenship by Investment Programmes (2018).

Globalization used to be a guarantor of economic growth. No longer, and the losers are poorer nations. They have restricted access to global markets and are largely excluded from beneficial labor migration.

Part 2: https://youtu.be/gIYaSEwoblY

Unfettered access to the world’s economic markets should boost prosperity and foster peaceful international coexistence - in theory. But which countries take advantage of the opportunities presented by global competition? And which countries avoid it, preferring to protect their economies at the expense of the poor? And why does free global trade preach the unrestricted movement of goods, while setting limits on labor migration? With these questions and contradictions in mind, we travel through the US, Peru, Senegal and Europe.

An agreement with China means the former steel producing center Duisburg is eyeing a renaissance. America, on the other hand, blames China and globalization for its declining steel industry. Billions of US dollars are invested in domestic industries and agriculture as part of the country’s "America First” policy stance. This has a detrimental effect on poorer nations. For example Peru, a nation left behind by globalization that’s making little progress in the fight against poverty.

When it comes to worldwide migration, there are clear winners and losers. Spain’s farming sector is starved of workers, while the EU resists immigration. In countries like Senegal, where illegal fishing and the appropriation of farmland by international concerns has left people destitute, migrants are leaving in search of a better life. One of the chief beneficiaries of globalization is China, whose migrant workers represent the confidence and strategy of their powerful homeland. "Globalization in Crisis" is a two-part documentary telling the stories of those who benefit - and those who suffer - as a result of globalization.

[Part 2 online next week]
