Economic growth increases when more people work more productively. However, economic growth has slowed in the last decade, as increases in productivity and hours worked have fallen to fractions of their previous rates. Returning to rapid economic growth will require policies that encourage individuals to rejoin the workforce and businesses to invest in physical capital.

Vestigial structures are evolution's leftovers — body parts that, through inheritance, have outlived the context in which they arose. Some of the most delightful reminders of the common ancestry we share with other animals, they show that the building blocks of the human body predate our species by hundreds of millions of years.

Forty-two percent of Americans say that humans were created in their present form within the past 10,000 years — a percentage that hasn't changed much since 1982, when Gallup started polling views on evolution.

Several lines of evidence, from the fossil record, comparative anatomy, and genetics, tell another story. But you don't have to read all the research to find signs of our evolutionary history — you can see it in the vestigial structures in each of our bodies, like the third molars that no longer fit in our mouths. For a few other examples, check out the video above.

What is the difference between a tornado and a hurricane? And what about typhoon? First, let’s get it straight: all these weather phenomena have to do with strong winds. Not my-umbrella-got-torn-from-my-hands strong, mind you, but rather my-house-got-blown-away-to-the-Land-of-Oz kind of thing. Yet before we get to the actual difference between hurricanes and typhoons, we must understand that they’re one and the same thing called a tropical cyclone.

If you live in moderate or colder climates, there’s nothing for you to worry about, even if your house is right by the seaside, because you’ll only hear about cyclones from the news. After all, they’re called tropical for a reason: they only form in tropical or subtropical areas, because they need warm water to get things going.

SUMMARY:
- A tropical cyclone is a huge mass of clouds that gather in the sky and start rotating counter clock-wise due to very low air pressure.
- Cyclones occur much more often than you think! But only few of them grow large and strong enough to become hurricanes or typhoons.
- The weakest version of a tropical cyclone is called a tropical depression. It’s a similar swirling mass of clouds, usually accompanied by storms, but the force of winds in it is not very high.
- When the winds are stronger than 39 mph, the cyclone is then called a tropical storm. This is a more serious threat, and you’ll do well to hide inside your house because gusts of wind might reach 72 mph.
- And only if the wind gets even more powerful than that, then it can be called a hurricane or a typhoon.
- If a severe tropical cyclone with wind speeds of over 75 mph occurs in the North Atlantic or North-East Pacific, it’s called a hurricane. If it’s in the North-West Pacific, then it’s a typhoon.
- We hear more about hurricanes than typhoons because the Atlantic Ocean is warmer than the Pacific, and warm water acts like a fuel for cyclones.
- Tornadoes can form almost anywhere they please, both over sea and over land. But there’s much more to it than that.
- A tornado is a swirling funnel of air coming down from the sky. It appears during thunderstorms, and it’s rather a consequence than a reason for severe weather.
- But despite its terrible power, a tornado is a very local event, and short-lived at that. The biggest one ever registered by scientists was just over 1.5 mi in diameter and lasted about an hour or so.
- The center, in its turn, is usually calm and windless — so calm, in fact, that it’s almost creepy. It’s called the eye of the tornado or the hurricane, and it’s basically the safest place to be when the phenomenon comes to you.
- There are 5 categories of hurricanes according to the National Weather Service. Category 1 is just slightly more intense than a tropical storm, and in some countries it’s still considered as such.
- Category 2 is another story altogether. The wind blows at speeds of up to 109 mph, and that’s where the real trouble starts.
- When a hurricane grows to Category 3, it’s already a disaster. First of all, it’s big. Secondly, it’s powerful. The winds are reaching 129 mph, and catching such a gust is like being hit with a race car.
- A Category 4 major hurricane is something you don’t want to see with your own eyes. With gusts of wind up to 157 mph, it can tear trees from the ground and hurl fairly large objects in the air, causing lots of damage.
- And finally, a Category 5 major hurricane is a thing to be avoided at all costs. In other classifications it’s even called a super typhoon or a super cyclonic storm, which says a lot.

Trucking is an especially fragmented industry, which makes it susceptible to continuous boom and bust cycles. While the pandemic wreaked havoc on several industries, trucking is no exception: the industry as a whole is experiencing a shortage of drivers, high turnover rates, and order delays, among a slew of other problems. With 40% of the global economy dependent on freight and logistics, the industry's issues resonate across supply chains and through other dependent industries.

Trucking is an $800 billion dollar industry that has proven too tough for one company to dominate.

Low barriers to entry make it easy for aspirants to start companies, and competition is fierce. There are thousands of trucking companies in the United States, and the fragmentation of the market produces huge boom-and-bust cycles.

Some companies have tried to consolidate or roll up smaller operations, but the industry is resistant to it.

New technological developments, such as self-driving trucks, could spur consolidation by removing one factor that keeps the industry so competitive: drivers. That will not be easy — companies are still perfecting the technology, and the regulatory landscape would need to be changed to accommodate these vehicles.

A cheese making business in the Alps is the project of Ethiopian entrepreneur, Agitu Ideo Gudeta. Forced to flee Ethiopia, she has built a new life in Italy.

A political activist forced to flee Ethiopia has built a new life for herself in northern Italy, where she’s founded a successful business producing and selling goat’s cheese. The move has helped increase numbers among an increasingly rare breed of the animals, which are allowed to graze on abandoned communal pastures.

Agitu Ideo Gudeta had to leave her homeland eight years ago after getting involved in protests against land grabs by international corporations. Arriving in Europe, the trained sociologist had to start again from scratch - and set out to found a business in the alpine Trento region. At the ‘La Capra Felice’ or ‘The Happy Goat’, she only uses milk from Pezzata Mochena goats, a local indigenous breed whose numbers have declined dramatically in the last few years. Starting with a herd of just 15 goats, Gudeta now has 180, and her firm has attracted media attention at both the national and international levels. Young people from all over the region are flocking to her dairy farm to learn how to make her popular cheese. The documentary tells the story of a brave entrepreneur with a smart approach who has managed to turn her concept into a success story.

The "New Silk Road" is an enormous Chinese international development project. It's a trade network that involves Asia, Africa, and Europe -- and more than 70 countries are already involved. It may turn the old world order upside down.

China is investing in bridges, port facilities, railroads, and roads around the world. Beijing is spending several hundred billion euros on what it calls the "Silk Road Economic Belt."

Eastern European and the Balkan countries in particular are interested in Chinese loans and investments, as they look beyond the EU for sources of capital. In turn, the region is attractive to China because of its strategic position as a gateway to the West.

A new coal-fired power plant is being built in Tuzla, Bosnia, with the help from China. But not everyone is in favor of the project. While the new plant will emit fewer emissions which will have a positive effect on air-quality, some question the country’s decision to commit to using coal for decades to come.

Serbia has received the most Chinese funding of any country in the region. The Chinese have invested in an old steel factory and mine, built a bridge over the Danube and a highway. The EU, however, is wary of Serbia's cooperation with Huawei. As part of China’s "Safe City Project", Huawei face recognition cameras have been installed in 800 spots around the city of Belgrade. But the most important project for Serbia: a railway line between Belgrade and Budapest. China sees it as an opportunity to demonstrate its ability to meet EU standards. The line is meant to end in neighboring Hungary, but so far no work has begun in the EU member state. Nevertheless, Hungarian President Victor Orban takes every opportunity to stress just how important China is as a partner and the benefits the Belt and Road Initiative will have for Hungary.

The Gobi's Hidden Treasures: Asia's Largest Desert

The Gobi desert can be above 40 degrees in summer and minus 40 degrees in winter - humans and animals depend on each other to survive.
Deserts are the most haunting of all the Earth’s landscapes. Sometimes we think of them as vast empty spaces that dwarf and test our human spirit. But that view is wrong in so many ways.
They are full of colour and contrast. There are mountains and lagoons among the dunes and plains. They often teem with life and are rich in resources. Their peoples have remarkable qualities of ingenuity and endurance, wisdom and humour – their festivals and gatherings full of colour and energy.

Following the consultative meeting on Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Trusted Travel Policy for the continent, conducted on 26 March 2021, this session focuses on “Creating a trusted network of COVID-19 testing laboratories”. As the continent battles with COVID-19, delivering trusted laboratory results will be crucial to opening borders and economies. Africa CDC, ASLM and PanaBios are coming together to strengthen the concept of a ‘Trusted Laboratory’ COVID-19 testing network across Africa, using advanced but environment-appropriate digital technology.

In this session, we discuss the digital innovation that seeks to create a bridge between Africa’s high-quality laboratories and seamless travel. We initiate a conversation about how travellers can identify accredited or certified laboratories for COVID-19 testing, and how the proposed ‘Trusted Laboratories’ digital infrastructure could help governments across the continent and the world make data-driven decisions about which laboratories they trust to provide health credentials to visitors travelling to their countries. Such a platform could also benefit airlines and others who want to create health bubbles and corridors to keep their customers safe from infection by quickly identifying laboratories with whom they can cooperate in validating health credentials.

Speakers:
• Nqobile Ndlovu, CEO, African Society for Laboratory Medicine
• Dr Ahmed Ogwell Ouma, Deputy Director, Africa CDC
• Paulo Gomes, Co-Chair, AfroChampions & Board Member, African Union COVID-19 Response Fund
• Dr Talkmore Maruta, Senior Biosafety and Biosecurity Officer, ASLM and Africa CDC
