The Comoros officially the Union of the Comoros (Comorian: Udzima wa Komori, French: Union des Comores, Arabic: الاتحاد القمري‎ al-Ittiḥād al-Qumurī/Qamarī) is an archipelago island nation in the Indian Ocean, located off the eastern coast of Africa, on the northern end of the Mozambique Channel, between northeastern Mozambique and northwestern Madagascar. Other countries near to the Comoros are Tanzania to the northwest and the Seychelles to the northeast. The capital is Moroni on Grande Comore.

At 1,862 km2 (719 sq mi) (excluding Mayotte),[3] the Comoros is the third-smallest African nation by area. With a population estimated at 798,000 (excluding Mayotte), it is the sixth-smallest African nation by population—although it has one of the highest population densities in Africa. Its name derives from the Arabic word القمر qamar ("moon").[4] The archipelago is notable for its diverse culture and history, as a nation formed at the crossroads of many civilizations. Though in the contested island of Mayotte the sole official language is French, the "Union of the Comoros" has three official languages: Comorian (Shikomor), Arabic and French.
Moroni with Harbor Bay and Central Mosque, Capital of the Comoros

The country officially consists of the four islands in the volcanic Comoros archipelago: northwestermost Grande Comore or Ngazidja, Mohéli or Mwali, Anjouan or Nzwani, and southeastermost Mayotte or Maore, as well as many smaller islands. However, the government of the Union of the Comoros (or its predecessors, since independence) has never administered the island of Mayotte, which France administers as an overseas collectivity. Mayotte was the only island in the archipelago that voted against independence from France in 1974; the latter has vetoed United Nations Security Council resolutions that would affirm Comorian sovereignty over the island.[5][6][7][8] In addition, a 29 March 2009 referendum on Mayotte's becoming an overseas department of France in 2011 was passed overwhelmingly by the people of Mayotte.

The "Union of the Comoros" is the only state to be a member of all of the following: African Union, Francophonie, Organisation of the Islamic Conference, Arab League and Indian Ocean Commission. The country has had a history marked by numerous coups d'état since independence in 1975. As of 2008 about half the population lives below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day.[9]

The history of the Comoros extends to about 1000 BC when the archipelago was first inhabited. The Comoros have been inhabited by various groups throughout this time. France colonised the islands in the 19th century, and they became independent in 1975.
Early inhabitants
The earliest inhabitants of the islands were likely people from the Swahili culture from as early as 1000 BC, small trading communities of Bantu-speakers from the coasts of East Africa.
In the 8th to 13th centuries AD they were followed by an influx of Austronesian sailors from Southeast Asia, who had earlier settled nearby Madagascar. They are the source for the earliest archeological evidence of farming in the islands. Crops from archeological sites in Sima are predominantly rice strains of both indica and japonica varieties from Southeast Asia, as well as various other Asian crops like mung bean and cotton. Only a minority of the examined crops were African-derived, like finger millet, African sorghum, and cowpea. The Comoros are believed to be the first site of contact and subsequent admixture between African and Asian populations . Comorians today still display at most 20% Austronesian admixture.

From around the 15th century AD, Shirazi slave traders established trading ports and brought in slaves from the mainland. In the 16th century, social changes on the East African coast probably linked to the arrival of the Portuguese saw the arrival of a number of Arabs of Hadrami who established alliances with the Shirazis and founded several royal clans.

Over the centuries, the Comoros have been settled by a succession of diverse groups from the coast of Africa, the Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia and Madagascar.

Europeans
Portuguese explorers first visited the archipelago in 1505.

Apart from a visit by the French Parmentier brothers in 1529, for much of the 16th century the only Europeans to visit the islands were Portuguese. British and Dutch ships began arriving around the start of the 17th century and the island of Ndzwani soon became a major supply point on the route to the East Indies. Ndzwani was generally ruled by a single sultan, who occasionally attempted to extend his authority to Mayotte and Mwali; Ngazidja was more fragmented, on occasion being divided into as many as 12 small kingdoms.

The Comoro Islands or Comoros (Shikomori Komori; Arabic: جزر القمر‎, Juzur al-Qomor; French Les Comores) form an archipelago of volcanic islands situated off the south-east coast of Africa, to the east of Mozambique and north-west of Madagascar. The islet of Banc du Geyser and the Glorioso Islands are part of the archipelago. The islands are politically divided between Union of the Comoros (pop. 795,601) and two territories of France : the region of Mayotte (pop. 212,645) and the Glorioso Islands, a part of the Scattered Islands in the Indian Ocean, the 5th district of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comoro_Islands

I have made it safely to my 142nd country — the lovely African-island nation of COMOROS!

Nothing gets me more excited than visiting places like Comoros, which are completely hidden and overlooked by the world.

Truth be told, Comoros is booming with life and it has such a unique culture!!

Two Facebook friends, Hamza & Armel, picked me up at the Comoros main airport yesterday morning and have been driving me all over to visit the best places on the island. The people here in Comoros are so kind and welcoming, despite not speaking much English (everyone knows French as it was a French colony).

In this video, I have done my best to educate you a little bit about what life is like in Comoros. I hope you enjoy, and please, comment with any questions/thoughts/comments you may have!

Have you ever been to Comoros?

After long walk all over the vanilla and ylang ylang plantation we came to the small village Paje to learn about simple everyday life in the Comoros islands. We helped Maketses brother to replace a roof with some palm leaves. Tali tried traditional sandalwood beauty mask, which helps to protect the skin from the sun in East Africa. We visited a very famous tailor to dress up with a traditional marriage dress.

2. Comoros Is Known as The Perfumed Island of The World
Comoros is the second largest producer of vanilla in the world and is also a huge exporter of ylang-ylang and cloves. Those unfamiliar with ylang-ylang might recognize it as one of the important essencesan endemic plant species in Comoros. Its oil is used as base oil for perfumes. Despite its use in perfumes, it is an essential oil with plenty of medicinal values. One of its important therapeutic applications is in aromatherapy.Apart from aromatherapy, it also has anti-depressant, antiseptic and aphrodisiac properties. Yes, if you want to boost your romantic spirit while on honeymoon in Comoros, ylang-ylang is the best remedy for that.
3. Comoros Has Experienced 20 Coup D’états
Since declaring independence from France in 1975, Comoros has experienced more than 20 coups d’état or attempted coups, with various heads of state assassinated. The coups have usually passed bloodlessly, with a recent failed coup-leader “believed to have dressed up as a woman trying to escape by boat to the nearby French-run island of Mayotte,” according to Reuters. The routine appears to bea new president takes power and fires people who worked for his predecessor. These disgruntled miscreants then attempt to take power by force, if successful, the people who worked for the first president will be fired. If unsuccessful, the would-be president flees to Mayotte in drag. Quite an interesting cycle of power there in Comoros right.

Determined to not let the lack of clothing and toiletries affect the start to my travels in East Africa, I headed out early and walked the road from my hotel to the centre of capital city, Moroni.

Along the way I met some of the Comorian people and even stopped off to watch a group of them play football on one of the most interesting pitches I’ve ever seen.

In addition to interacting with the Comoros locals, I show you what to do in Moroni including Volo Volo Market, the National Museum of Comoros and Ancienne mosquée du Vendredi (Old Friday Mosque).
