The Open Education Resource Foundation, based in Dunedin, NZ, exists to make higher education available to everyone in the world at a reasonable cost. We achieve quality by using an open source process to assemble world-class openly-licensed curriculum materials at WikiEducator.org.

We deliver course materials through our OER universitas (https://oeru.org) network, which includes more than 30 institutional partners, using our "next generation digital learning environment" made up entirely of open source online services, situated around the world.

All of our custom development and integration is made available as open source software, and we provide both an open code repository and a "how-to" blog (https://tech.oeru.org) which helps others recreate our services for their own institutions or communities.

My presentation will detail the state of our open source technology stack (it will be built around the content of this blog post: https://tech.oeru.org/2018-upd....ate-oeru-technology-

The foundation operates on the principle that no learner should have to compromise their freedom to participate in our learning, nor should they have to compromise their digital privacy. To aid that, we use exclusively open source software, and all content is openly available without registration. The only cost to learners is for assessment services for formal academic credit provided by our institutional partners.

linux.conf.au is a conference about the Linux operating system, and all aspects of the thriving ecosystem of Free and Open Source Software that has grown up around it. Run since 1999, in a different Australian or New Zealand city each year, by a team of local volunteers, LCA invites more than 500 people to learn from the people who shape the future of Open Source. For more information on the conference see https://linux.conf.au/

NALLYWOOD is a film and entertainment production company that mostly focuses on educating learners, to improve their inborn skills and talents that can in future enhance and increase their chance of becoming entrepreneurs, self-employees and earn a living regardless of their academic performance. In addition, the project also aims at giving hope to the hopeless and have them redirected in realizing that there is a lot they can accomplish parallel to their academics as addressed by Dr. Howard Gardener's theory of multiple intelligence.

Thus, I have initiated a Namibian talent development project (Namibia's Greatest Show) that we have introduced to all Namibian schools and the general public with the youth as our main target. The goal and mission are to be able to enhance skills in acting, dancing, singing, and not limited to a variety of other talents as supported extra-curricular framework. I believe this will be beneficial to the education system. The future generation as well as the community as a whole. This will also contribute to the expansion of the arts, music and film industry in Namibia.

The NALLYWOOD team, therefore, host auditions at different schools then we choose the best learner students to perform on well-known local halls centers where all schools will be a part of and they will all compete for prizes that will also benefit the winner's school and the community at large.

Unlock your mind to develop Africa.

Hosted by Liz Carlile, director of communications at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the discussion features Elizabeth Nsimadala, a Ugandan young agriprenuer, president of the Pan-Africa Farmers Organization (PAFO) and the Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF); Clare Shakya, director of IIED’s Climate Change research group; and Duncan Macqueen, researcher in IIED's Natural Resources research group.

The Global Pandemic has caused significant disruption to food supply chains, thankfully without causing significant long term disruptions in supply. As the OAC Chair in Food System Leadership, Mike has been a reliable advocate and resource to the industry, especially in recent months. Mike regularly acts as a subject matter expert for CBC/CTV’s news broadcasts, and was a key speaker in a 4-H virtual presentation early this spring sharing key information and providing understanding to over 400 4-H members who attended the online event. Mike will provide a current overview of the short term immediate impacts of the shutdown and then a discussion of what may change as we move forward. He will also highlight some top-level trends we can expect to see in the coming years.

2021 Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw Public Lecture

Abstract:
The current epidemic is notable for the vast traffic in official and unofficial information and claims, and this has brought unprecedented demands for commentary from ‘experts’. Among many others, I have tried to contribute by providing multiple interviews for radio and TV, writing articles and blogs, feeding Twitter, and with Anthony Masters both producing a weekly column on Covid statistics for a major Sunday newspaper and now writing a book.
I will offer some personal insights into the challenges of trying to bring some illumination to the statistics about the pandemic, illustrated with some examples of things have gone fairly well, as well as communication disasters. In particular, I shall focus on the challenges of combatting the constant pressure to speculate, blame, recommend policies, and go outside one’s area of expertise, and the overwhelming importance of trustworthy communication.

Anatomy of an Epidemic: History, Science, and the Long-term Effects of Psychiatric Medications

The burden of mental illness in our society, as measured by the number of people on disability due to mental illness, has dramatically increased in the last 35 years. This raises the following question for Robert Whitaker: How do psychiatric medications affect people over the long-term? What do history and science show?

Whitaker is the author of five books, three of which tell of the history of psychiatry. Mad in America: Bad Science, Bad Medicine and the Enduring Mistreatment of the Mentally Ill was named by Discover magazine as one of the best science books of 2002. His second book Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America won the Investigative Reporters and Editors book award for best investigative journalism in 2010, and has been translated into nine foreign languages. His latest book on the history of psychiatry, co-written with Lisa Cosgrove, is Psychiatry Under the Influence: Institutional Corruption, Social Injury, and Prescriptions for Reform.

He is the founder of madinamerica.com, a website that features research news and blogs from an international group of writers interested in "rethinking psychiatry."
