Cape Verde, situated off the west coast of Africa, was uninhabited until Portuguese explorers arrived in the 15th century, making it a Portuguese colony. These islands played a significant role in the transatlantic slave trade, contributing to the nation's cultural diversity. In 1975, Cape Verde achieved independence from Portugal, becoming a sovereign nation with a unique blend of African and Portuguese influences, both culturally and linguistically. The islands' history is a testament to their resilience and rich heritage, which is reflected in their diverse music and dance traditions.

**Dance Styles Originating from Cape Verde:**

1. **Funaná:** Funaná is a lively dance and music genre native to Cape Verde. Dancers perform quick footwork, often in pairs or groups, to the lively rhythms of instruments like the accordion (gaita) and the metal scraper (ferrinho).

2. **Batuku:** Another traditional Cape Verdean dance and music style, Batuku is performed by a group of women seated in a circle. It involves clapping, singing, and body percussion, conveying themes of community and identity.

3. **Coladeira:** Coladeira is a popular Cape Verdean dance style known for its upbeat tempo and romantic lyrics. It's commonly performed at social gatherings and celebrations, creating a joyful atmosphere.

4. **Morna:** Morna is characterized by its slow, melancholic music, often accompanied by a dance featuring graceful and flowing movements. It's known for its emotional depth and is sometimes called the "blues of Cape Verde."

5. **Tabanka:** Originating in Santiago, Cape Verde, Tabanka is a lively and celebratory dance style that reflects the joy and vibrancy of Cape Verdean culture. It's often performed during festive occasions.

6. **Passada:** Passada is a captivating Cape Verdean dance style known for its graceful and flowing movements. Dancers perform intricate steps that mirror the emotions and stories conveyed in Passada music, characterized by its melancholic melodies and heartfelt lyrics.

**Comparison with Kizomba:**

While Kizomba is not originally from Cape Verde (it originated in Angola), it has gained popularity in Cape Verde and other Lusophone countries. Here's a comparison with some Cape Verdean dance styles:

- **Passada vs. Kizomba:** Both Passada and Kizomba are characterized by slow, sensual movements. However, Passada is typically performed to Cape Verdean music with its unique emotional storytelling, while Kizomba is danced to Angolan music, featuring its distinct rhythms and style. Both emphasize close partner connection and expression of emotions through dance.

Cape Verde is known for several things, and it's increasingly becoming a popular tourist destination for various reasons:

1. **Beautiful Beaches:** Cape Verde boasts stunning beaches with white sands and crystal-clear waters. The islands offer an ideal setting for sunbathing, swimming, water sports, and beach relaxation.

2. **Diverse Landscapes:** Despite its small size, Cape Verde offers a wide range of landscapes, from volcanic peaks to lush green valleys. The dramatic scenery appeals to nature lovers and hikers.

3. **Cultural Diversity:** Cape Verde is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, which reflects a blend of African, Portuguese, and other global influences. Visitors can experience this diversity through music, dance, cuisine, and festivals.

4. **Music and Dance:** Cape Verde has a vibrant music scene, with genres like Morna, Funaná, and Coladeira. Travelers often visit to enjoy live music performances and experience traditional dance forms like Funaná and Batuku.

5. **Water Activities:** The islands are a haven for water enthusiasts. Tourists can enjoy activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing, and fishing.

6. **Friendly Locals:** Cape Verdeans are known for their warmth and hospitality. Visitors often appreciate the friendly and welcoming nature of the local population.

7. **Cape Verdean Cuisine:** The cuisine of Cape Verde combines African and Portuguese flavors. Seafood is a staple, and dishes like Cachupa (a hearty stew) and pastries like "pastéis" are popular among tourists.

8. **Sustainable Tourism:** Cape Verde has been making efforts to promote sustainable tourism, which attracts eco-conscious travelers looking to enjoy the islands' natural beauty while preserving the environment.

9. **Cultural Festivals:** Various festivals and events take place throughout the year, offering travelers a chance to immerse themselves in local traditions and celebrations.

10. **Relaxation and Serenity:** Many tourists are drawn to Cape Verde for its tranquility and the opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of more crowded tourist destinations.

The island nation of Comoros voted at the weekend. It was a tense three-way presidential run-off. Vice President Mohamed Ali Soilihi and former coup leader Colonel Azali Assoumani are seen as the favourites. Vote counting is under way now following the Sunday election. In the first round of voting the Vice President won nearly 18 percent of the votes. Colonal Assoumani took 15 percent. 19 of the 25 candidates who contested the first round of voting rejected the results. They've been demanding a recount. But the country's constitutional court upheld the first round results. Comoros has three main islands. According to electoral rules, the president needs to be picked on a rotational basis from them. This time it's Grande Comore's turn.
