President John Pombe Magufuli has been accused of presiding over a government that is intolerant of dissent and has curtailed rights of expression and the media.

Tanzania will hold a referendum in April on a new constitution. The draft on which Tanzanians will vote proposes among other things, the establishment of an independent electoral commission and allowing for the first time, legal challenges to presidential election results. To tell VOA’s Vincent Makori more about it, is Honorable Samuel Sitta, Tanzania’s Minister of East African Cooperation and former chairman of Tanzania’s Constituent Assembly, which conducted a review of the country’s constitution.
Tanzanian President John Magufuli has not appeared in public since the last 17 days and rumours have spread that he is ill. Countries opposition is seeking answers on his health.

Despite having more than 100 ethnic groups and bordering eight countries, it has succeeded in overcoming tribal tensions in a region where some neighbours have failed to do so. In a significant development, hundreds of supporters of Tanzania's main opposition party, Chadema, took to the streets of Dar es Salaam, marking the first significant demonstration in the country in seven years.

Wongel Zelalem reports on a post alleging that Tanzania has banned Swahili as a teaching language in secondary schools. But the claim is false as per government spokesman.
Tanzanian opposition leader and former presidential candidate Tundu Lissu returned home after more than two years in exile in Europe to a cheering crowd on Wednesday, after the government lifted a ban on political rallies.
A former lawmaker and a fierce critic of the government, Lissu initially left the country to seek treatment abroad after he was shot 16 times, mostly in his lower abdomen, in his car by unknown gunmen in the administrative capital Dodoma in 2017.
He had been arrested eight times in the year leading up to the attack.
Lissu was welcomed by a large gathering of his supporters at the Julius Nyerere International Airport, after flying in from Brussels before making his way to address a rally in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

It's been more than two years since Samia Hassan took over the presidency in Tanzania, inheriting power directly from her predecessor, the late John Magufuli. A career politician, she's the first female president of her nation and its fair to say her time in office has seen her put Tanzania on a path to transition.
Opposition figures ostracized and imprisoned under Magufuli have been welcomed back into the fold. And she's relaxed restrictions on the press, licensing opposition publications banned by her predecessor.

Bola Tinubu from Nigeria's ruling party has won the country's presidential election, the electoral authority said in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Nigerians stayed up late into the night to hear the announcement. Mr Tinubu is now expected to take over from outgoing president Muhammadu Buhari.
The election was held over the weekend and the results have been disputed by the two main opposition candidates.
Tinubu is from the All Progressives Congress — the party of outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari — and won with 8.8 million votes, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Meanwhile, the INEC said Peoples Democratic Party candidate Atiku Abubakar came second with 6.9 million votes. Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, who scored a major upset in Tinubu's home state of Lagos, came third with 6.1 million votes.
