Tunisia's President Kais Saied on Monday denied he was planning a coup and defended his decision to dismiss the prime minister and freeze parliament.
The president dismissed the prime minister on Sunday and said he would assume the country's executive authority. He claimed he acted to to fight the "hypocrisy, treachery and robbery" of the political class.
The head of Tunisia's largest parliamentary party, Rached Ghannouchi, held a sit-in protest outside the parliament building on Monday after the army barred him from entering.
The political escalation followed a weekend during which thousands of Tunisians took to the streets in anti-government protests that turned violent.

Tunisia's new president has pledged a rule of reconciliation and consensus as he took his oath in front of the newly elected parliament to complete the country's democratic transition. Al Jazeera's Nazanine Moshiri reports.
He explained that this refusal was "not because of the derisory amount (...) but because this proposal goes against" the agreement signed in Tunis and "the spirit that prevailed at the Rome conference" in July.

Tunisia's new technocratic government headed by Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa was sworn in Wednesday, replacing an Islamist-led administration under an accord to end political turmoil and prepare for fresh elections. Duration: 00:26
Tunisia's president Kais Saied has released a new draft constitution that will give him what critics call, 'royal powers.'
It will be voted on in a referendum on July 25.
If passed, the President will be given ultimate authority over the government and judiciary.
And parliament's powers will be significantly weakened.
Tunisia's not alone in this regard - other nations have also used their constitutions to allow their leaders to remain in office and strengthen their powers.
So, what's behind this move?

The European Union and Tunisia have signed a memorandum of understanding for a “strategic and comprehensive partnership” aimed at combatting irregular migration and boosting economic ties between the bloc and the North African country, which lies on a major route for migrants and refugees travelling to Europe.
European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held renewed talks with Tunisian President Kais Saied on Sunday as the number of migrants and refugees departing from Tunisia and trying to reach Europe has significantly increased in recent months.

While Tunisia's president focuses on changing the constitution, his critics say he has failed to tackle the country's economic problems.
Official figures show the inflation rate in Tunisia above 8 percent, but it feels higher for many families struggling to make ends meet.
With a fifth of the workforce unemployed and poverty levels rising above what they were before the Arab Spring, soaring to new highs, Tunisia is again at a turning point.

Tunisian President Kais Saied sparked outrage after he said on Tuesday in an official statement that the arrival of sub-Saharan migrants in Tunisia is a plot that “changes the demographic composition of Tunisia”.
Far-right French politician Eric Zemmour also highlighted Saied’s statements on Twitter on the same day, saying that “Maghreb countries themselves are ringing the alarm about surging migration” and asking “what we are waiting for to fight the Great Replacement”, referring to a white nationalist conspiracy theory that claims that migration is being used to replace white people in western countries.
In recent years, Tunisia has been a key transit hub for people from other African countries crossing the Mediterranean to enter Europe.
Tunisian authorities have recently detained several critics and dissenters as part of a crackdown which has been decried as another part of Saied’s ongoing power grab.

Police in Tunisia have detained more than a dozen prominent opposition figures in the past months, accusing them of conspiring against state security. Activists say President Kais Saied has been steadily turning back the clock on democracy since July of 2021. The latest move is the arrest of Rached Ghannouchi. He's head of Tunisia's moderate Islamist party Ennahda, and a long-time critic of president Saied. While Saied's regime seems ever more entrenched, opposition voices remain.
