Today's daily update video from South Africa is on 25 January 2024. In this video we start today's video with a fire that broke out in the Tygerberg Nature Reserve in Plattekloof (Cape Town) in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Beautiful cloudy sunrise in Amanzimtoti, and we drove along the main beach at Onrus towards Hardebaai. We watch two jackals try to steal the food of two cheetahs in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in Northern Cape Province. We then show you the sunrise from the verandah at the Groen Huis Guesthouse in Phillipolis, and we visit several more places across South Africa.

Weather forecast across South Africa today:
There is a significant risk of fires in the City of Cape Town and the West Coast in the Western Cape Province, as well as the western and northern parts of the Northern Cape Province. Some parts of the country will be hot and dry, while others will be cloudy and wet today. Let's get specific. The Gauteng Province weather forecast predicts clouds, sunshine, scattered showers and thundershowers. Since the UVB sunburn index will be high, sunscreen and protective clothing are essential. The maximum temperature is expected to be 28°C in Johannesburg and 30°C in Pretoria. Morning drizzle and escarpment fog are expected in Mpumalanga and Limpopo. Except in the Lowveld, the afternoon will be partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers. At 29°C, Polokwane will have a higher maximum temperature than Nelspruit at 26°C. Unless in the south, the North-West and Free State will be partly cloudy and hot with afternoon showers and thundershowers. The forecast for Mafikeng is 34°C and Bloemfontein 33°C. Overcast skies and morning fog near the coast in the Northern Cape. Partly cloudy skies and high temperatures will follow later in the day. The northeast should see showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures in Kamiesberg Municipality can reach 42°C. Coastal winds are light to moderate from the south to southwest. In the morning, the south coast of the Western Cape will be cloudy, but it will clear up and become very hot, especially over the Central and Little Karoo. Be aware of this area's high UVB sunburn index and take precautions. Cape Town will top out at 32°C, while George will hit 40°C. Morning cloudy skies with fog south of the escarpment in the Eastern Cape are followed by partial cloud cover and warm to hot temperatures. East winds will be strong along the coast. A maximum temperature of 28°C is expected in Port Elizabeth and 32°C in East London.

The ICJ, the UN’s top court, has said Israel must 'take all measures within its its power' to prevent all acts within the scope of the genocide convention in its war on Gaza. In an interim ruling, a large majority of the court’s 17-judge panel voted for urgent measures, with the exception of ordering a ceasefire. Judge Joan Donoghue read out the ruling in a case brought by South Africa, who accused Israel of genocide in its campaign against Hamas in Gaza. The court also ordered an improvement in the humanitarian situation.

South Africa will learn if its application for provisional measures against the State of Israel at the International Court of Justice was successful. The Court's 17 Justices hearing Pretoria's case accusing Israel of acts of genocide in its war against Hamas in Gaza will deliver an order dealing with provisional measures that could shift the character of Israel's military operations. The preliminary ruling will not grapple with the merits of the broader allegation of genocide.

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has been re-elected leader of the governing African National Congress (ANC).

He defeated his former health minister Zweli Mkhize by 2,476 votes to 1,897.

The lead up to the vote at the party conference was not without scandal. The president has faced accusations of money laundering, and his rival was accused of corruption. Both deny the allegations.

Mr Ramaphosa’s victory puts him in pole position to lead the ANC in the 2024 election.

We speak with scholar of colonialism Mahmood Mamdani about the destruction of educational facilities in Gaza and why the Hague’s Friday ruling on South Africa’s genocide case against Israel brings the world “onto a territory which will bring more and more facts to light.” Palestinian human rights attorney Diana Buttu describes the ongoing situation in Gaza and why she suspects Israel and the United States will attempt to ignore the ruling until it is brought before the United Nations Security Council.

Days of heavy rain have hit the South African province of KwaZulu-Nata leading to floods which have killed at least 45 people, according to authorities.

Emergency services are searching for survivors as many remain missing.

Key roads across the city of Durban are shut and mudslides have destroyed many homes leaving people standing on rooftops awaiting rescue.

The floods come as scientists warn that climate change is fuelling heavier rainfall than usual in southern Africa.
