In the Gambia, like in most other parts of Africa, the cost of fertiliser is high.
The government is able to provide a small subsidy, but the costs can be prohibitive for small scale farmers.
It means that Gambians are coming up with innovative solutions, one such collective is based in Bakau, a town west of Gambia’s capital city of Banjul.
The Bakau women famers are turning organic waste into fertiliser, providing cheaper alternatives while cleaning the environment.

The military coup in the Central African nation of Gabon is the eighth to hit central and western Africa. Gabon’s newly re-elected leader Ali Bongo, who was detained on August 30, 2023, by the country’s military, is seen as the latest Western military ally to fall. But Ali Bongo and his father, who ruled Gabon for over four decades, had been steadily building relations with China, making it Gabon’s largest trading partner. The regime overthrow now brings uncertainty to the future of those ties.

The international community has responded with a mixture of condemnation and calls for stability following a military takeover in the west African country of Gabon. France and the UN condemned the coup, while Russia, China and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell expressed concern about the risk of instability spreading into Gabon following a string of coups across the Sahel region, most recently in Niger.

Ali Bongo, the president of Gabon is under house arrest after a political coup. In a video obtained by Bloomberg, Bongo calls on the people to "make noise." Soldiers appointed the head of the republican guard as the country’s new leader, annulling elections in which Bongo secured a third term.
Soldiers in Gabon appointed the head of the republican guard as the OPEC member state’s new leader, hours after placing President Ali Bongo under house arrest and annulling elections in which he secured a third term.
The putsch in the former French colony is the ninth in sub-Saharan Africa in the past three years, and follows a coup in Niger last month. The military takeover drew condemnation from the US, Nigeria, France and the African Union, as it sparked a slump in the nation’s dollar bonds and raised concerns of a spill over of the selloff to other African countries with high political risk.
General Brice Oligui Nguema will serve as Gabon’s transitional president, according to a statement read out on state television in the capital, Libreville, on Wednesday evening. The junta said it will maintain a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the nation of 2.3 million people, and urged residents to return to work on Thursday.
