France has started evacuating its citizens from Niger after a military coup. According to French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, the first flight with over 260 individuals has left the capital, Niamey late on Tuesday.
France has sent three planes to Niamey to evacuate French and European citizens in the wake of a coup last week that toppled pro-Western leader Mohamed Bazoum.
"Considering the ongoing coup in Niger and the fact that the situation continues to be worrying, we decided to make sure that the French citizens who want to leave Niger can do so," Colonna said.
Italy also said it would send a special flight to repatriate its nationals from the capital Niamey. Spain's Defense Ministry announced preparations to evacuate more than 70 nationals.

On 26 July, a group of soldiers removed Niger's democratically elected president from power, citing security concerns and economic mismanagement. In the pro-coup demonstrations that followed, crowds waved Russian flags and chanted slogans against France, the country's former coloniser.

The anti-French – and more widely anti-foreign – sentiment has rapidly become a key element of how the coup is being framed, as the junta faces the threat of military intervention by Ecowas, the west African regional bloc. The journalist Garé Amadou explains what is behind the flags and the anti-French sentiment.

If all else fails 'we are going into Niger' - that was the message from a West African bloc of nations today.

(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

Defence chiefs from the ECOWAS group have been meeting in the Ghanaian capital Accra, to discuss details of a stand-by military force.

The group's commissioner insisted military intervention was a last resort - but voiced his frustration at efforts to engage diplomatically with Niger's new junta. They took control in a coup late last month and have held the elected President in detention since.

According to multiple French media reports, France has begun negotiations with Niger's military regarding the possible departure of French troops from the West African country, following the deterioration of relations after the July 26, 2023 coup that saw the ousting of Nigerien President Mohammed Bazoum. Former French ambassador to Mali and Senegal Nicolas Normand confirmed the news, telling some news outlets that, according to his sources, talks were underway between the French and Niger forces to "partially" evacuate soldiers. Normand added that his sources, who wish to remain anonymous, stressed that the talks should not be interpreted as a recognition of the coup leaders, but rather as a "technical" dialogue between the two militaries.
French newspaper Le Monde also said neither the number of French soldiers involved nor the timing of their departure remains unknown, and that the talks are not being held with coup leaders, but with regular army officials with whom France has long been cooperating. France has been at odds with Niger's new military authorities since it refused to recognise the July 26 coup that deposed French ally President Mohamed Bazoum. The coup was seen as another major blow to French influence in the region, following the military takeovers in Mali in 2020 and Burkina Faso in 2022.
French President Emmanuel Macron had until now rejected calls by the military junta for the departure of French troops currently in Niger, saying Bazoum, currently held prisoner in the country, remains Niger’s legitimate leader. As a result, the coup leaders have demanded that the French ambassador and military leave Niger, and thousands of people have been rallying in the capital Niamey for days to support the new regime's uncompromising stance against the former colonial power.

Military chiefs from the West African regional bloc Ecowas are meeting to discuss the deployment of a standby force for possible military intervention to restore democracy in Niger.

The gathering is taking place on Thursday and Friday in the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

At least 11 of the bloc's 15 member states back a military deployment to reinstate the democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, after diplomatic efforts failed to yield any positive result.

Niger's coup leaders have warned they will defend themselves against any intervention.
