At least 29 soldiers have been killed in an attack in western Niger, according to the country’s defence ministry.
A three-day national mourning period was declared in the country on Tuesday over the incident that involved “improvised explosive devices and kamikaze vehicles by more than a hundred terrorists”, according to a televised statement made by the ministry on Monday night.
It added that two soldiers were seriously wounded and “several dozen terrorists” were also killed.
The attack took place near the country’s border with Mali during military operations aimed at “neutralising the threat posed” by the ISIL (ISIS) armed group in the area, according to the ministry.

The government of Sao Tome and Principe has cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan, switching its allegiance to Beijing. China's welcomed the decision by the African island nation saying it was 'back onto the correct path of the One China principle'. Taiwan's foreign ministry has condemned the move, alleging Sao Tome demanded a huge amount of financial support. Interview with Craig Copetas.

The President of São Tomé and Príncipe, H.E Carlos Manuel Vila Nova has today visited, Nyanza Perch Ltd, a fish processing and export company, Kiira Vehicle Plant and Nytil textiles all based in Jinja, Uganda.
He appreciated president Museveni for his unwavering commitment in steering Uganda's development.
China''s Foreign Ministry announced today it had officially resumed diplomatic relations with Sao Tome and Principe, following an announcement last week that the African nation had broken off ties with Taiwan. French media also warned that relations between China and the Vatican are warming, potentially posing another threat to Taiwan. According to a CCTV report, Sao Tome and Principe and China have officially resumed diplomatic relations, (following an earlier announcement last week.) Wang YiChinese Foreign Minister The resumption of diplomatic relations is good for mutually beneficial exchanges between Sao Tome and Principe, China and African countries. China also has a new friend in the international community.Chiu Chui-cheng. Mainland Affairs Council Deputy Minister Once again, Taiwan''s severing of diplomatic relations with Sao Tome and Principe shows China is indeed a temptation for our diplomatic allies and is working behind the scenes to disrupt Taiwan’s diplomatic ties. We don’t want cross-strait relations to revert to this older era of confrontation.Aside from losing relations with Sao Tome and Principe, ruling and opposition lawmakers now worry the Vatican may sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan.Foreign Minister David Lee believes that the current relationship between Taiwan and the Vatican is stable though China and the Vatican have recently increased their interactions. A report on Radio France International says talk of establishing diplomatic ties has reached the final stage.David LeeForeign MinisterThe report on this French website is just the same old story with nothing new worth noting. Today in Beijing the China state-run Catholic congress was held with the new leadership of this group announced. I think soon we will see more clues emerge. The strength of Taiwan-Vatican relations may soon be put to the test. The consequences could be quite serious as Taiwan could potentially lose its only diplomatic ally in Europe.
The Western African island country of Sao Tome and Principe announced today it was terminating diplomatic relations with Taiwan and establishing relations with China. Foreign Minister David Lee denied speculation that the move was linked with the Tsai administration''s refusal to acknowledge the 1992 consensus. But he did suggest the African country was motivated by financial promises from China. The flag of Sao Tome and Principe no longer appears in the lineup of the flags of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies in the lobby of the Foreign Ministry. Foreign Minister David Lee said money was behind the African country’s decision to cut ties. David LeeForeign MinisterGiven the size of Sao Tome and Principe’s financial shortfall, Taiwan had no way to fulfill its needs, and so it disregarded its nearly 20-year alliance with Taiwan, playing both sides of the strait off against one another in an attempt to get a better deal. Reports suggest Sao Tome and Principe had previously requested US$210 billion in aid from Taiwan. Though Foreign Minister Lee didn’t confirm that number, he did say that the country had earlier submitted some outlandish requests to Taiwan for financial support.David LeeForeign MinisterSao Tome and Principe definitely brought up some astronomical figures (in one of their requests), but under our current approach of “steadfast diplomacy,” we weren’t willing to play these money games. Today at noon, President Tsai convened a high-level national security meeting in response to the incident. An official statement released after the meeting said that Taiwan didn’t need to use money to compete with China in diplomacy, and said that the Foreign Ministry would conduct a detailed review of the country’s existing aid arrangements with its diplomatic allies.
Independent Democratic Action (ADI, opposition), led by former Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada, won Sunday's legislative elections in Sao Tome and Principe, with a total of 36,549 votes, according to preliminary data released today by the National Electoral Commission (CEN).
The provisional figures for the legislative elections were presented tonight at the CEN headquarters in the capital, more than 29 hours after the polls closed, a delay that prompted protests from ADI militants, who burned tyres near the CEN offices, which were surrounded by the military.
