The Presidency has released a statement, congratulating the government and the people of Zimbabwe for organising and holding the harmonised elections to elect the President, National Assembly, and Local government representatives.

It statement goes on to say that South Africa is conscious that these elections took place under a difficult economic environment due to the burdening sanctions which the people of Zimbabwe continue to unjustly endure.

Furthermore, South Africa has taken note of the preliminary pronouncements by the invited International Observers Missions including the African Union and the South African Development Community Observer Missions.

South Africa calls on all the parties in Zimbabwe to work in unison in sustaining peace and work towards development and shared prosperity in the country.

Brookings Institution’s Africa Growth Initiative will launch its flagship report, “Foresight Africa: Top priorities for Africa in 2023,” that examines pressing policy issues on the continent in a time of heightened global turbulence. This year’s launch will feature a high-level panel of leading Africa experts, who will offer insights and recommendations on the following questions:

Will 2023 be the year Africa recoups lost ground and returns to its pre-pandemic growth trend?
What should the top priorities for the region in the year ahead be in order to safeguard the health and socio-economic wellbeing of the continent as well as ensure an inclusive and equitable post-pandemic recovery?

A study by the South African Development Community Secretariat estimated that transport inefficiencies cost African economies R3.3 trillion ($170 billion) annually. This is caused by a series of factors, including the lack of harmonisation of standards and regulations in the sector, which is hindered when it comes to efficient transport flows.

Standard Bank has announced that in its partnership with its insurance and asset management division, Liberty, it plans to launch a sustainable energy fund generated from its own capital. This, in a bid to garner funding from other institutions and investors to go big on investing in sustainable energy projects on the continent. The bank was updating the media on its Environmental, Social and Governance, also known as its ESG journey as it works to balance financing African economic development and playing its part in reducing the continent's carbon footprint.

The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Observer Mission report on the Zimbabwean elections has been handed over to Hakainde Hichilema, the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation.

The SADC Observer Mission has since expressed its reservations about the recently concluded harmonised elections.

The regional observer team flagged voting delays, the banning of opposition rallies, and biased state media coverage as concerns.
