Professor of Tropical Paediatric Infectious Disease, Professor Kathryn Maitland, presents her inaugural lecture.
Over 2 million children worldwide die each year from curable illnesses such as malaria and septicaemia (a bacterial bloodstream infection). The sophisticated levels of medical care in resource-rich countries have substantially increased the survival rates, but transferring these to sub-Saharan Africa is not always possible, as access to intensive care and the range of technologies is limited. Conducting clinical trials in Africa in real life situations can provide important advancements for these issues and global health but they also can result in unexpected and controversial findings.
Recorded at Imperial College London on 08 Nov 2011

The Caravans of Gold Workshop was a virtual event hosted by the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art on May 28, 2020.
This workshop is a collaboration among the Education Department of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Georgetown University’s Center for Contemporary Arab Studies and Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, and Howard University’s Center for African Studies.
Gold from West Africa was the engine that drove the movement of things, people, and ideas across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East in an interconnected medieval world. As the incredible works in this exhibition show, it is not possible to understand the emergence of the early modern world without this West African story. The Caravans of Gold exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art calls on what archaeologists have termed “the archaeological imagination”—the act of recapturing the past through surviving traces—to present a critical rethinking of the medieval period. Here, rare and precious archaeological fragments are seen side by side, bringing new understanding to complete works of art from the medieval period.

As Africa's economies improve, the demand for better health care will increase but few countries on the continent are able to spend the $34 to $40 a year per person that the World Health Organisation considers the minimum for basic health care. The IFC estimates that about 30 billion U.S dollars in investment is needed in this sector, aid alone cannot and will not fill this gap. CNBC Africa's Nozipho Mbanjwa is joined by Dr Anuschka Coovadia, head of Healthcare for KPMG and Dr. Victor Ng'ani of the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists & Dentists Board.

Mock COP26 (mockcop.org) aims to fill the void of this year’s postponed COP (the UN’s international climate change conference, the Conference of Parties) with an online, virtual youth conference. From the 19th November to the 1st December 2020, delegates will hear from speakers from across the globe before the event culminates with a global statement from the youth of the world.
Mock COP26 is about mobilising and building the capacity of young people to be able to actively participate in decision-making around the climate crisis. Instead of shutting them down, Mock COP26 builds up young people from across the globe, and for the first time, gives them a meaningful seat at the table. We're engaging with the people with power, and showing them what young people have to offer.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the global economy is skidding into recession. Reduced consumption and transportation also mean reduced CO2 emissions. From India to China to the United States, skies are blue and the air is cleaner and healthier in cities than it has been for years. The pandemic has caused seismic shifts in how we produce and consume goods and could open a path to a more sustainable future. Or, government bailouts and investments could double down on the fossil fuel economy, and set back efforts to avoid catastrophic climate change. This conversation will feature Berkeley researchers discussing the science and policy behind CO2 emissions and opportunities for a different path forward.
