The global community has failed in preventing genocide in the post-WWII era, and in the 21st century, we see evidence of genocide and mass atrocities wherein certain wars and conflicts encompass calculated and systematic processes attempting and/or threatening genocide, ethnic cleansing, and/or crimes against humanity. We even see threats of genocide in non-conflict regions. Hatred has proliferated in the 21st century.

Since we study and analyze wars and conflicts at the U.S. Naval War College, the concepts of genocide and mass atrocities are not only highly pertinent, but also extremely important in terms of ethical standards in the modern era.

This is the fourth annual conference on Genocide, and it invites panelists to focus on the issues pertaining to genocidal ideologies, warning signs of genocide, and genocide prevention. This year’s theme is “War Crimes Accountability.”

The purpose of this conference is to provide a panel discussion with Q&A about a difficult, pertinent topic that relates to our studies of war and conflict, and conflict prevention, in the context of “Genocide Studies.”

This conference includes scholars who specialize in the topic of “Genocide Studies.” At a minimum, this will open the door to discussions and analyses pertaining to genocide, and the reality that, despite the convictions of the global community in the post-WWII era, genocide has still taken place and continues to be used as a tool of war in the 21st century.

In the framework of REA-Bridge, ANIMA Investment Network hosted a webinar about "Entrepreneurship as a driver of growth and social transformation in Africa"" on December 9th, 2021.

Africa is growing at around 5%, compared to 3.5% for the rest of the world, according to the IMF, and has many economic advantages - being the richest in raw materials (oil, minerals, agricultural products) and home to the youngest population. However, the continent is also undergoing rapid changes and faces new challenges; while one billion people currently live on the continent, that is to say 1 in 7 human beings, there will be 1 in 5 by 2050; climate change will have a major impact on the region; the opening of financial markets on the continent and the improvement of internet access through submarine cables are all changes that will impact Africa's place in the world.

In this context, entrepreneurship can play a major role in African growth and social transformation. While many barriers to entrepreneurship remain - lack of institutions and legal frameworks for entrepreneurship, rigidities of economic and political landscapes, barriers to trade and travel difficulties between African countries; many solutions are developing - establishment of "Start-ups Acts" (Tunisia, South Africa), multiplication and professionalization of intermediaries likely to accompany African entrepreneurs (incubators, gas pedals, business angels, investment funds), return of the diaspora and building bridges between global ecosystems...

- 00:00 Introduction by Raphaële Cohen, Head of Innovation, ANIMA Investment Network
- 15:13 Hélène Guéhenneuc, Freelance consultant, founder and director, MAHNA (Burkina Faso)
- 22:51Q&A
- 23:27 David Cheboryot, Manager East Africa, E4Impact Foundation (Kenya)
- 35:23 Q&A
- 38:24 Mathieu Bécue, Innovation and Digital Economy Cooperation Attaché, French Embassy in Sénégal

The Galapagos Archipelago is a model of conservation in the Pacific Ocean. Its remarkable diversity of marine species is explained by the upwelling of cold ocean currents. But an increasingly common climatic anomaly occurring far out to sea is killing life.

A crew of mariners, scientists and filmmakers are followed as they cast off on the Sedna IV, an oceanographic schooner, to sail around the world exploring the beauty of nature, how ecosystems work and conservation challenges facing the planet.

Foreign business investors are looking to buy farmland in Africa. One of the most profitable new agricultural hotspots is Ethiopia. [Online until: February 4, 2019]
Part 1: https://youtu.be/isiYYVmvn2U

Farmland - the new green gold. In the hopes of huge export revenues, the Ethiopian government is leasing millions of hectares of land to foreign investors. But there’s a dark side to this dream of prosperity.

The results are massive forced evictions, the destruction of smallholdings, state repression, and a vicious spiral of violence in light of environmental devastation. Global institutions like the EU, World Bank and DFID are contributing to this disaster with billions of dollars in development money every year. Whoever gets in their way is met with severe consequences. The young Ethiopian environmental activist Argaw learned that the hard way when he tried to raise awareness for his country’s plight.

Are transnational land investments bolstering the economy or selling out the country? While some hope for financial gains and development, others are losing their very livelihood. In pursuit of the story, we meet investors, bureaucrats, persecuted journalists, struggling environmentalists and farmers who have been evicted from their land. Swedish director Joakim Demmer’s shocking real-life thriller starts in apparently remote corners of Ethiopia and leads through global financial centers, right to our dining tables.
