How do you go from absolute poverty to passive income in a short amount of time? What if you were raised on the other side of the world, where even a basic education had to be fought for, and every opportunity was a constant struggle? This is the real story of Yamundow Camara, who went from sleeping on a dirt floor in a small village of Gambia to making a million dollars per year thanks to real estate.
Yamundow grew up in an environment foreign to many of us. When her parents passed away in her youth, she was forced to live with relatives that treated her as a nuisance, not someone worth nurturing. She slept on the floor of her family’s home and was sometimes lucky enough to have a cardboard box as a mattress. She was set to be wed in her early teenage years, but thanks to her drive, determination, and pleading of her aunts, Yamundow was given a chance to go to high school and college and later immigrate to the US.
From there, Yamundow put success as her sole focus. She not only academically overachieved, but was able to do an INCREDIBLE amount of investing with almost no money, no credit score, and no experience in the industry. She now sits on over thirty rental units, with a monthly income that rivals most Americans’ yearly salaries. Yamundow has one of the most incredible stories we’ve ever shared on the podcast, and you’ll have to tune in to hear her unimaginable path to success.

Mankind continues to face one of the deepest health crises in its history, affecting the quality of democracies, economies, and welfare worldwide. More than five years from the adoption of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals framework, we find ourselves at a point of setback, where the need to have strong and inclusive institutions, able to guarantee justice and peace, becomes instrumental to enable the achievement of the already ambitious SDGs.
The Covid-19 pandemic has presented significant challenges to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, jeopardizing the global ability to achieve all 17 goals by 2030. This becomes evident with increased levels of inequalities, limitations in State capacity, erosion of democratic institutions, constraints in the access to justice and protection of human rights, increased conflicts based on exacerbates social, political and economic weaknesses all over the world, among other concerning effects that continue to impact us on a daily basis. In addition to this, limitations in the capacity to collect data (official and unofficial) and access to information has presented complications to accurately measure progress and have a clear idea of where we stand and what is needed to continue moving forward.
This event seeks to enable a conversation to discuss evidence-base findings and propose forward looking recommendation to recover from the pandemic, enhancing methodologies for measuring progress, the availability of data, and the effects on the quality of institutions. The conversation will highlight the importance of data collection from official and unofficial sources to achieve SDG 16+ in the post-pandemic world, as well as the need to overcome limitations in the access to information.

Changing the narrative on Africa and looking beyond aid and potential dependency on it are essential aspects for future development. On 9 May we invite you to a panel debate on this topic.
Africa has been growing strongly over the past decade and has had gradual yet uneven success in increasing human development levels. However, putting Africa on the path to sustained and balanced development remain a great challenge for the international community.
With the war in Ukraine’s impact on the African continent – on top of Covid-19, debt crisis, conflict and climate change - poverty rates remain stubbornly high, and with its limited economic diversification, persisting inequalities, high unemployment, democratic decline, rising food insecurity and environmental degradation, the continent has yet to embark on a sustainable development path which can benefit all women and men over time.
For Africa to succeed in their development the international system must focus more specifically on the continent and discover more effective instruments for addressing its particular needs. Changing the narrative on Africa and looking beyond aid and potential dependency on it are essential aspects for future development. During this year’s EU-AU Summit, African leaders expressed the need for a change of mindset, from a donor-recipient approach to a one based on partnership and equal treatment.
On the 9th of May, UNDP Norway, the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs and the Center for Development invite you to a panel debate where we will raise questions related to development challenges on the African continent and the need for a new narrative.
Participants are:
Ahunna Eziakonwa, Assistant Secretary-General and Director of UNDP’s Regional Africa Bureau
Morten Bøås, Research Professor at NUPI,
Hamdi A. Mohamed, Statistics Norway and Rethinking Economics Norge
Ragnhild Nordås, Senior Researcher at PRIO
Moderator of this event is Professor Dan Banik, Director of the Oslo SDG Initiative, University of Oslo.

The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition’s 2023 Mid-Atlantic Summit brings our regional community together through a hybrid event that showcases what investments in diplomacy, development, and democracy are worth to the security and stability of communities across the Mid-Atlantic region.
About this event
Plastic waste across the African continent is expected to geometrically increase in the next decade due to rising global production, importation and usage, as well as poor plastic waste mismanagement. Plastic waste mismanagement presents substantial risks to biodiversity and marine life and contributes to global warming and consequently climate change. To address the problem of plastic waste mismanagement, there is a need for critical research that provides data to bridge gaps between plastic waste policy and regulations and their enforcement. One of our goals is to engage in research on the African continent to generate relevant data that governments and their agencies can utilize to make informed decisions about regulating and enforcing plastic regulations, creating awareness, and encouraging and training local stakeholders on effective waste management strategies.
This AFRICER workshop seeks to provide opportunities for those in the plastic waste management space (i.e. policy analysts, enforcement officers, plastic waste management practitioners and educators, etc.) to engage in conversations and discussions on effectively implementing plastic waste policies in Africa. The outcomes of the workshop will be relevant for policy planning and implementation. Specific focus areas will include:
Overview of plastic waste policies across African countries;
The importance of data in developing, implementing, and enforcing plastic waste policies;
Behavioral change as an outcome of effective policy implementation; and
Building capacities of local authorities to enforce plastic waste policies.
Guest speakers
Márcia Balisciano, Chief Sustainability Officer, Global Head of ESG and Corporate Responsibility, RELX.
Dr Pritish Behuria, Associate Prof, University of Manchester
Aly Elnady, Consulting Analyst, Sustainability & Social Impact at CID Consulting – Egypt.

This workshop is supported by the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens.

The Mali Empire was an empire in West Africa from c. 1235 to 1670. The empire was founded by Sundiata Keita and became renowned for the wealth of its rulers, especially Mansa Musa . The Manding languages were spoken in the empire. At its peak, Mali was the largest empire in West Africa, profoundly and widely influencing the culture of the region through the spread of its language, laws and customs. Much of the recorded information about the Mali Empire comes from 14th-century North African Arab historian Ibn Khaldun, 14th-century Moroccan traveller Ibn Battuta and 16th-century Moroccan traveller Leo Africanus. The other major source of information is Mandinka oral tradition, as recorded by storytellers known as griots.
The empire began a small Mandinka kingdom at the upper reaches of the Niger River, centered around the town of Niani . During the 11th and 12th centuries, it began to develop as an empire following the decline of the Ghana Empire, or Wagadu, to the north. During this period, trade routes shifted southward to the savanna, stimulating the growth of states such as Bonoman. The early history of the Mali Empire is unclear, as there are conflicting and imprecise accounts by both Arab chroniclers and oral traditionalists. Sundiata Keita is the first ruler for which there is accurate written information . Sundiata Keita was a warrior-prince of the Keita dynasty who was called upon to free the Mali people from the rule of the king of the Sosso Empire, Soumaoro Kanté. The conquest of Sosso in c. 1235 gave the Mali Empire access to the trans-Saharan trade routes.
