South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has been re-elected leader of the governing African National Congress (ANC).
He defeated his former health minister Zweli Mkhize by 2,476 votes to 1,897.
The lead up to the vote at the party conference was not without scandal. The president has faced accusations of money laundering, and his rival was accused of corruption. Both deny the allegations.
Mr Ramaphosa’s victory puts him in pole position to lead the ANC in the 2024 election.

We speak with scholar of colonialism Mahmood Mamdani about the destruction of educational facilities in Gaza and why the Hague’s Friday ruling on South Africa’s genocide case against Israel brings the world “onto a territory which will bring more and more facts to light.” Palestinian human rights attorney Diana Buttu describes the ongoing situation in Gaza and why she suspects Israel and the United States will attempt to ignore the ruling until it is brought before the United Nations Security Council.

The murder rate in South Africa is at a 20-year high.
According to the latest annual statistics, more than 27,000 people were killed in a year but only 12% of cases were solved.
Security van heists and robberies are also a serious problem, with many people relying on private security instead of police.
Minister for the police, Bheki Cele, said the government was getting "on top of things".

South African President Ramaphosa celebrated with party members on January 26 as they watched the World Court ruling on Israel live on a big screen.
The U.N.’s International Court of Justice has ordered Israel to “take all measures in its power” to prevent genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip but stopped short of ordering a cease-fire in the embattled territory.
The preliminary ruling delivered Friday by the 17-judge ICJ ordered Israel to enable the provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance in Gaza, where most of the territory’s 2.3 million people are struggling to find adequate food and shelter after three months of fighting between Israel and militant group Hamas.
The case was brought to the court by South Africa, which argued that Israel is violating the 1948 United Nations Genocide Convention, established in the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust. #ICJ #SouthAfrica #Israel #reels #videography #voanews

Judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) have delivered an interim ruling in South Africa's genocide case against Israel, ordering Israel to prevent genocidal acts in Gaza.
Following the ruling, South African president Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed the court's decision and urged for an end to the conflict through a two-state solution.
PM Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would "continue to defend ourselves and our citizens while adhering to international law".
Under the court's decision, Israel must report to the court within a month on what it's doing to uphold the order.
A verdict on South Africa's allegation of genocide is not expected for years; Israel strongly denies the accusation, calling it "baseless"
