African women of today are tenacious and diverse. Africa has produced female leaders such as Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first democratically-elected woman president in Liberia, Meaza Ashenafi, the first female Chief Justice of Ethiopia, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, Namibia, President Sahle-Work Zewde, Ethiopia

But despite this growth, equality is still far off, and progress on women’s participation in decision-making is too slow. Data from UN women shows that Only six countries have 50 percent or more women in parliament.

S Africa launches probe into more than 90 'political murders'

The South African government has set up an inquiry to investigate what activists call political murders in Kwazulu Natal province. More than 90 people have been killed in and around the Glebelands Hostel since 2014 and yet no arrests have been made in connection with the deaths.

There are also concerns the violence could escalate when the race to succeed President Jacob Zuma as party leader intensifies.

As of Thursday, the US House of Representatives remained without a leader, primarily due to the ongoing turmoil within the Republican Party. Jim Jordan, an ultra-conservative congressman from Ohio and the Republican's embattled nominee for the role of House Speaker, continued to press for a third vote on his candidacy. This persistence comes despite the absence of a clear path forward and mounting frustration at his refusal to withdraw.

The House Republican conference was slated for a closed-door meeting on Thursday, with no official voting schedule in place for the day. Jim Jordan, a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump who spearheaded efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, now heads the House Judiciary Committee and is steadfast in his determination to remain in the race, even in the face of growing opposition.

Notably, the former House Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, was removed from his position in a historic 216-210 vote on October 3rd. This marked the first instance in US history where the House voted to oust its leader.

The South African government has significantly decreased the country’s covid-19 restrictions, including those on gatherings.

In a national address, President Cyril Ramaphosa says the country is moving away from managing the pandemic through disaster regulations and would in future use health provisions.

New health regulations would be published for public comment.

Among the notable changes is that masks will no longer be required outdoors.

The number of people allowed at funerals has also increased - doubling from 100 to 200.

South African journalist and Editor, Dianne Hawker, joined Felicity Ezewuike on the Continental Prime News.

The South African Home Affairs Minister is appealing the case of Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEP) to the Supreme Court. This action follows a recent finding by the North Gauteng High Court that ZEP permit holders should be able to seek for permanent residency in South Africa.

The ZEP programme was developed to assist Zimbabwean people living in South Africa with legal status. It granted them permission to live, work, and study in South Africa for a set length of time. The current court decision, however, has ramifications for their eligibility for permanent residency.

The decision of the Home Affairs Minister to appeal the case highlights the intricacies of immigration laws and their legal interpretations. The outcome of the Supreme Court's review will have a significant impact on the future of Zimbabwean nationals living in South Africa and the immigration policies of the country.
